Limiting forms for capillary-gravity waves
نویسنده
چکیده
The form of steep capillary waves is of interest as a possible initial condition for the formation of air bubbles at a free surface. In this paper the limiting forms of pure capillary waves and of quasi-capillary waves are studied analytically. Crapper’s finite-amplitude solution is expressed in a simple form, and is shown to be one of several exact elementary solutions to the pure-capillary free-surface condition. Among others are the solution z = w + sinh’w, where w is the velocity potential, and also z = w3. The latter solution, though it represents a self-intersecting flow, can be used as the first in a sequence of approximations to the form of the steepest wave. Hence it is shown that the influence of gravity on the shape of the limiting ‘bubble ’ is very small. The result is confirmed by an examination of Hogan’s numerical calculations of limiting capillary-gravity waves. In the crest of a limiting wave the particle velocity is almost constant and equal to the phase speed. This property makes i t possible to apply a quasi-static approximation so as to determine the form of the crest, and hence to find an expression for the complete profile of a capillary-gravity wave of limiting steepness. It appears that there exists a solitary wave of capillary-gravity type on deep water.

Capillary-gravity and capillary waves generated in a wind wave tank: observations and theories
Short water surface waves generated by wind in a water tunnel have been measured by an optical technique that provides a synoptic picture of the water surface gradient over an area of water surface (Zhang & Cox 1994). These images of the surface gradient can be integrated to recover the shape of the water surface and find the two-dimensional wavenumber spectrum. Waveforms and two-dimensional st...
متن کاملAn Estimation of Wave Attenuation Factor in Ultrasonic Assisted Gravity Drainage Process
It has been proved that ultrasonic energy can considerably increase the amount of oil recovery in an immiscible displacement process. Although many studies have been performed on investigating the roles of ultrasonic waves, based on the best of our knowledge, little attention has been paid to evaluate wave attenuation parameter, which is an important parameter in the determination of the energy...
متن کاملNumerical calculation of steady gravity-capillary waves forced by a surface pressure distribution
Steady free-surface flow due to a pressure distribution under both gravity and capillary effects in water of finite depth is considered. The fluid is assumed to be inviscid and incompressible and the flow is irrotational. The problem is formulated as an integro-differential equation. Numerical results are found to depend on three parameters: Froude number, F , Bond number, τ∗, and the magnitude...
متن کاملGravity Perturbed Crapper Waves
Crapper waves are a family of exact periodic traveling wave solutions of the freesurface irrotational incompressible Euler equations; these are pure capillary waves, meaning that surface tension is accounted for but gravity is neglected. For certain parameter values, Crapper waves are known to have multi-valued height. Using the implicit function theorem, we prove that any of the Crapper waves ...
متن کاملParticle trajectories in linear periodic capillary and capillary-gravity water waves.
Surface tension plays a significant role as a restoration force in the setting of small-amplitude waves, leading to pure capillary and gravity-capillary waves. We show that within the framework of linear theory, the particle paths in a periodic gravity-capillary or pure capillary wave propagating at the surface of water over a flat bed are not closed.
